Starting a J-1 Internship or Trainee program in the USA is an exciting opportunity, but it also comes with a lot of questions. Who can apply? Do you need previous experience? How much does the program cost? What about housing?
We have collected some of the questions candidates ask us most often to help you understand how the program works before you apply.
Who can apply for the J-1 Internship/Trainee program?
Eligibility depends on your education, graduation date, and professional experience.
For a J-1 Internship, candidates generally need to have an academic degree related to their field of interest. If you graduated within the last 12 months, you may be eligible without previous professional experience.
If more than 12 months have passed since your graduation, you generally need at least one year of relevant professional experience in your field of interest.
For a J-1 Trainee program, candidates need to meet the applicable education and experience requirements. For candidates applying based on a high school education, at least five years of relevant professional experience is required.
Because eligibility can depend on the candidate’s individual background, we recommend checking your profile with us before starting the application process.
Do I need previous work experience?
The short answer is:
For a Trainee program – yes, relevant professional experience is required.
For an Internship program – not necessarily. If you have graduated within the past 12 months and your academic background is relevant to the internship, previous professional experience may not be required.
If you graduated more than 12 months ago, relevant work experience is required.
How long does the program last?
The maximum duration of a J-1 Hospitality Internship/Trainee program is 12 months, and most of our hospitality opportunities are available for this period.
However, depending on the host company and available training plan, shorter opportunities may also be available, such as 6 or 10-month programs.
How much does the J-1 program cost?
The program fee depends on the duration of the program and the specific program structure.
As a general estimate, our J-1 programs cost approximately $4,000 – $5,000, with some additional expenses such as the visa fee and airfare.
During the initial consultation, we provide candidates with a clearer overview of the expected costs so they can plan their budget before moving forward.
Is my position secured in advance?
Yes. The placement process starts with a conversation about your education, experience, career goals and areas of interest.
We then review the available opportunities and discuss which ones may be a good fit for your profile.
Once you decide to move forward with a suitable opportunity, you will have an interview with the host company. If the interview is successful and the host company selects you, you will receive a job/training offer and can continue with the remaining steps of the J-1 process.
Can I choose my city?
We always discuss your preferred locations and try to take your preferences into consideration. However, we cannot guarantee that a position will be available in a specific city at the time you apply.
For this reason, we encourage candidates to remain open to different locations. The USA has many great destinations, and being flexible can give you access to a wider range of opportunities.
Is housing provided?
It depends on the individual offer.
Some host companies provide accommodation, while others do not. When housing is not provided, candidates are responsible for finding and paying for their own accommodation.
Housing information is provided before you decide whether to move forward with an opportunity, so you can consider the location, salary and accommodation situation together before accepting the offer.
How many hours per week will I work?
J-1 Internship/Trainee programs generally involve 32 – 40 hours of training per week.
Additional hours or overtime may be possible depending on the host company’s needs, schedule and the terms of the training plan.
Can I have a second job?
No. A second job is not permitted under the J-1 Internship/Trainee program rules.
The purpose of the program is structured professional training in your field of study or professional background, rather than working multiple jobs.
What happens if my J-1 visa is denied?
We provide candidates with guidance and preparation for the visa interview, but visa approval can never be guaranteed.
A portion of the program fee is paid at the beginning of the process and is non-refundable in case of a visa refusal. The remaining amount is not charged/retained if the visa is denied, according to the applicable refund terms.
We always recommend that candidates carefully consider the financial commitment before starting the process.
Can I participate in more than one J-1 Internship/Trainee program?
This is one of the most common questions – and it is important to understand that there are different rules that are often confused with each other.
The 212(e) two-year home-country physical presence requirement is one rule. It applies only to certain J-1 participants and, when it applies, requires the participant to spend two years in their home country before becoming eligible for certain U.S. immigration benefits.
However, there are also separate rules concerning repeat participation in J-1 Internship and Trainee programs.
For example, participants who have already completed a J-1 Trainee program generally need to spend at least two years outside the United States before participating in another J-1 Trainee program.
Repeat Internship participation is subject to its own eligibility requirements, so having previously participated in a J-1 program does not automatically mean that you can immediately apply for another one.
If you have previously participated in a J-1 program, let us know which category you were in, when you completed it, and what type of program you are interested in. We can then check the applicable eligibility rules for your situation.
Still have questions?
Every candidate has a different educational and professional background, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to J-1 eligibility.
If you are not sure whether you qualify, send us your CV and tell us what type of internship or training opportunity you are looking for. We can review your profile and explain what options may be available to you.
